A warm welcome to all new and returning students! With university starting again we wanted to give you a bit of information about our plans for the year. Our focus is generally towards cyber security, but we have high hopes of exploring some other areas of computing, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning if you’re interested – so please let us know if there are areas that you want to explore.
For the first semester we’re focusing on red team activities and ethical hacking. If you’ve ever wondered how to breach a business or how things work in a real red team, this is the semester for you! We’re planning to cover both physical aspects and breaking into networked systems – from lock picking to nmap-ing, it’ll all be here.
We also hope to have industry speakers coming along soon to give you some real insight into the industry, so keep an eye on our socials.
Handy cyber security resources:
Here are a few things to check out between sessions:
Immersive Labs is a great place to start as it offers an introduction to many of the important concepts of cyber security, as well as providing a platform to practice with some of the most popular tools available. Topics covered link very well with what the sessions are about so if you’re ever unsure about how to use a tool, we recommend checking Immersive. As an added bonus, you can sign up for free using your university email.
Hack The Box starts off with a challenge, as you will need to find the key to be able to access the website and its resources. Once you’re in, you’ll have access to a ton of vulnerable machines for you to break in to, to boost your way up the leader board. Once you’re on there, you’ll have access to apply to job listings, using your rank as proof of skills!
If you’re having issues with the challenges from HTB, IppSec offers full walkthroughs of retired boxes. We recommend buying VIP for a month and working your way through the retired boxes, using the videos to help when you get stuck. At £10 a month it’s about the same as Netflix but drastically advances your skills and could lead to a full job in industry!
The sessions are open to all skill levels; whether you’re new or well-versed in cyber security.
Whatever your level, there will be a challenge for you, and people to point you in the right direction. We have been working hard to be able to provide you with some interesting sessions, so make sure to pop in on Thursdays from 6 to 8pm.
